# Hydrochloric acid

Hydrochloric acid is a strong inorganic acid. Chemically pure hydrochloric acid is a colourless, transparent liquid. Technical hydrochloric acid may be yellowish due to contaminants, mainly of iron ions.

Concentrated hydrochloric acid has a pungent odour and smokes in moist air.

### Industrial applications include:

- **pH adjustment**
- **Cleaning and etching of metals and for galvanic purposes**
- **Regeneration of ion exchangers**
